Sharing Our Stories | name
In the spring, preK students come for a classroom visit. With many new faces in a short time, we have name tags to help us remember who is who.

After she went off to play, another little one said,
"My dad never gets sick. He eats Advil every morning."

At school, a third grade student said to me,
"I met Pearl's brother."
It took me a second as I tried to think how he would know other dogs from Pearl's family
and then I remembered that Ethan volunteers with the gym teacher a couple times a week!

Sometimes Pearl will try to lick my ankles while I'm teaching. She likes the lotion, I think, and I've told my students about it.

For the first time, I left Pearl home today.
As we walked out of the classroom yesterday, I noticed a limp.
It was unusual and it was still there this morning.
I left her home to rest and to not have to jump in and out of the car.
It was strange for all of us to not have her at school.
As we walked up the stairs to go outside to play, I said, "I miss Pearl."
I heard, "I do too!"
And then I heard, "Now we're just a NORMAL class."
I giggled.
Having Pearl in our classroom (and school) is definitely special.
(Side note: Pearl was not limping when I got home!)

While working with play dough, I told X and S that I loved play dough when I was little girl.
I shared how the smell takes me right back to my childhood!
It triggers memories like we read about in the book, Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge.
X then said, "You're never too old to play with play dough."
So true, X, so true.

H came to tell me that a classmate, who does not speak English, was running down the hall.
"But I helped him and told him no."
"I know how to speak in no."
"I've been able to do it since I was a baby."

I needed to talk to a couple little friends about something that happened.
J was honest and said he did it.
He then said, "If you don't tell the truth, you'll get a long nose...like Hokey Pokey!"

A little friend in my class said,
"I have homemade water today."
I smiled and wondered if that meant it came from her tap and not from the store.

Sharing Our Stories | introductions
Our custodian, Mr. Kirby, lives near the school.
He ran into one of my kindergarteners at a community playground.
She was very excited to see him!
(Mr. Kirby likes to make them smile and jokes with them throughout the day. They love him.)
She was quick to introduce him to her family.
"This is Mr. Kirby!
He's the cleaning teacher!"
It was a sweet introduction.

In the mornings, we gather in a circle and share how we're feeling.
"I'm feeling ____, because ____."
We share lots of stories.
K caught me by surprise when she started one with this -
"I'm feeling happy, because I learned how to shovel horse poop!"
Yes, joy can be found in everything!

Sharing Our Stories | kindergarten teacher
A second grade teacher dropped by to tell me a little story today.
Avery, a former student of mine, said,
"I'm going to grow up to be just like Mrs. D and be a kindergarten teacher!"
Then she added,
"Now I just need to find a dog!"
I burst out laughing!
Everyone needs a Pearl!

After a sick day on Friday, a weekend and a morning out for a meeting, Pearl and I returned to class this afternoon. It was wonderful to see our little kindergarteners again!
This conversation made me giggle!
K: I missed you and Pearl so much.
Me: Oh, I missed you too!
K: Well, I actually missed Pearl the most!

Sharing Our Stories | school giggles
While in the gathering area, KL joined in a conversation with a story about eye glasses.
She shared how her mom has more than one pair.
Then she said, "To be able to read, my mom keeps two pairs because she is blonde without them!"
There was a little chatter around us, so I didn't catch on until IC commented with,
"She's not blonde. She's blind without them."
I nearly fell off my chair in giggles about KL's mix up and how IC responded!
Oh, how I love kindergarten!

A new student started today.
R: I can't believe there's a dog in our class! Wow!
Me: Do you have a dog at home?
R (with less enthusiasm): No, we just have a baby at home.
