Friday evenings are my favorite every week.
But the first Sunday of the winter break is special.
I realize I don't have to think about school
and I don't have to go anywhere on Monday morning.

Because of Two Writing Teachers, I started this blog eleven years ago. While it has been a long time since I've posted with the Slice of Life community, I'm grateful for the encouragement I was given.
1. They encourage teachers to write. When we are writing, we can better help and understand our students.2. They encourage community. They read each other's words and share comments that touch the heart.
3. They encourage people to tell their everyday stories. To have the words written down is a wonderful gift to ourselves and to our families for years to come.

The class was getting loud and I couldn't hear M answer questions about a book.
I stepped away to get them settled, and when I returned, M said in a sweet voice,
"Mrs. Druart, you know, if you were famous, all you would have to do is (putting finger to lips) and they would stop."
I'm still giggling about that one.

I used journals and then I started saving them on a blog called Little House on the Ridge.

Sharing Our Stories | name
In the spring, preK students come for a classroom visit. With many new faces in a short time, we have name tags to help us remember who is who.
One little boy had a long name that is often shortened. I asked him what he liked to be called and mentioned his full name and a few that are sometimes used for his name. He didn't seem to know what I meant.
I then asked, "What does your mom call you?"
He replied, "Oh! My mom calls me Sweetie!"
Perfect response.

On Monday, I received an email from a parent of a former student. She asked if I would like a winter coat that her son outgrew. I replied with a yes, as there are times when we need coats for students, and I was thinking about next year.
On Thursday, a co-worker brought the coat to me. When dropping off her son, the parent had passed it along to her to give to me.
What else happened on Thursday was interesting!
On that same morning, one of my parents sent a text asking if her son could borrow a coat because he was cold on the way to school.
I had one. It was delivered to me.
Perfect timing.
God's timing.

Why did I start writing here?
Michelle Nero encouraged me to join the Slice of Life with Two Writing Teachers, a wonderful place to grow as a teacher. They share ideas for the classroom, and they encourage teachers of writing to write. They also know teachers, like students, need a supportive community.
Why do I keep writing here?
While I have not been a part of the Slice of Life community for a long time, I continue to write here to save thoughts and stories. Like my dad, with scrapbooks, slides, and tapes, I want to save memories for my children to enjoy now or later.

lemons
Teachers of New Brunswick are without a contract and negotiations are at a stand still. During April, an awareness campaign started to fight for better learning conditions for students and better working conditions for educators.
It is the first time I can remember teachers being allowed to speak openly about the realities inside schools. In New Brunswick, teachers cannot speak against their employer, which is the government. Teachers are now speaking up.
We will probably never look at lemons in the same way.
Public education has been squeezed dry. We are expected to do more and more, with less and less. We need the government to support us.
