The following was shared in an Eaton's group on Facebook -

In Moncton, New Brunswick, I worked for Eaton's on Foundry Street and then later at the store in Highfield Square. As a teenager, my first job with Eaton's was in 1953. I returned full-time from 1955-1959, and worked part-time over the years. I was delighted to become a part of the personnel department with Mrs. Setchell and then Mrs. Rose Goguen. I eventually went to work as the personnel manager for another department store on Main Street. I was with Woolworth | Woolco turned Walmart, located in Dieppe, until retirement.

Travelling by car to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia took a long time. Taking the Princess Helene from Saint John to Digby helped with the journey.

In the dining room, they would have the table and chairs roped to the wall. I was scared sometimes. Some kids would get really sea sick. There was a very tall nurse who was very kind.

After Cedric's first visit to the farm, Dad took him and Otis Hicks to the boat to head back to Bethany. And they just missed it. There was a Bethany crew on the deck laughing and waving at them. 

After Ron and Kay Morehouse were married, some of us came to Moncton with them by car. Ron was a mechanic. We made friends for life.

One day in high school, we wanted to get outside to play croquet.

We changed the clock in the classroom and it worked!

Mr. Green, a favorite teacher, didn't notice and let us out early!

What chores did you have growing up?

I split kindling and filled the wood box. 

I tiered the wood up in the barn and basement.

I had to go get the cows. I would be scared going through the woods.

I had to fill the wood box. I didn't think I would ever get that done every night.

Things I miss from their younger days -

1. cuddling and reading to them

2. everyone tucked in bed under the same roof

3. Sunday dinner at Bampie and Mammie's house after church

Stories from Home

We had a bad snow storm.

Donald Lutes was older and David Lutes was younger than me.

Their father was overseas and their mother was expecting.

Dad knew the boys shouldn't walk home from school all alone.

(I'm not sure where I was that day. We were living with my grandparents.)

He went up to the school.

Through the storm, Dad carried David, while Donald walked beside him.

They went down Magnetic Hill, walked in the Charles Lutes Road, and then across to Elmer Lutes' on Ryan Road.

Their mother met them at the door, and she said,

   "I wondered how the boys were going to get home."

Dad did stuff like that.

- the night before Eliza flew to Scotland for the fall semester -

Growing up, Dad would pray with us before we went to school.

Moments like this with our children are so comforting.

As a child, a nice summer day would be meeting school friends at the mill pond for a swim. 

In the evening, I would play on the old hay wagon out back of the the machine shed. I would sing and pretend I was a singing cowgirl. 

My dad was quite a singer and yodeled. You could hear him for miles. 

I got so I could yodel as well. What a noise!

As we were driving around today, Mom said,

   "I wish my grandfather had known Cedric.

      He would have loved him."

Yesterday Mom and I took a drive to Albert County, and stopped at Wacky Wonderful Waffles in Hillsborough. One of my families gave me a generous gift card for this local take out, and we thought it would make a fun outing. Our lunch was delicious, and Pearl gobbled up a free doggy cone!

I enjoyed hearing Mom's stories as we passed by familiar landmarks, homes, and churches.

Before we headed home, we found a little market for Mom to pick up carrots. It's almost impossible to go somewhere with my parents without needing to stop at a grocery store! There's a sale, or Mom is making something for someone or having someone over for dinner.

Three little things to remember about the train ride -

1. Dad fell asleep waiting in the train station.

2. On a train bound for Halifax, Mom was a little worried they wouldn't remember to let them off in Sackville. It was cute. (When I saw the boarded up train station where we were picking them up, I almost wondered myself!)

3. They didn't sit together on the train, both choosing to sit by a window. They were across the aisle from each other. When the attendant asked, Mom and Dad assured him that they still liked each other, and have been in love for 70 years.

Dad enjoys trains and had not been on one

since the 70's so I thought it would be a perfect gift.

Mom bakes bread.

When bread makers were new, Dad bought one for Mom thinking it would be helpful.

It came up the other day, and Dad said,

   "I bought your mother a bread maker

   and she was insulted and took it back the next morning."

We had a good giggle!

The day after Christmas I had a message from Mom.

"Couldn't find my glasses (nothing new). Your father has been wearing them for TWO days."

We laughed a long time about that one.
