When I was home sick one day last fall,

   one of my kindergarteners asked,

"Can you text Mrs. D and ask her to send Pearl in?"

Yesterday Mom and I took a drive to Albert County, and stopped at Wacky Wonderful Waffles in Hillsborough. One of my families gave me a generous gift card for this local take out, and we thought it would make a fun outing. Our lunch was delicious, and Pearl gobbled up a free doggy cone!

I enjoyed hearing Mom's stories as we passed by familiar landmarks, homes, and churches.

Before we headed home, we found a little market for Mom to pick up carrots. It's almost impossible to go somewhere with my parents without needing to stop at a grocery store! There's a sale, or Mom is making something for someone or having someone over for dinner.

When Eliza was a little girl, we went to the high school to see the musical, Annie.

Our pastor's daughter was playing the part of Annie.

When a golden retriever ran out onto the stage, Eliza whispered to me,

   "Is that a real dog?"

Another package arrived!

My friend, Christine, sent a book to Pearl and my class.

How kind and generous! We are grateful and enjoying it so much.

The book, "Dog Saves Duck", is a true story about a sweet friendship.

A month ago, on February 21, Global News came to the school to meet Pearl.

Originally, the segment was to be about animals in schools as PAW begins a guinea pig fostering program.

After meeting Pearl and hearing her story, the reporter, Shelley Steeves, said a segment needed to be all about Pearl. And that's what she did. On February 22, Pearl's life in school was in the news!

It brought mixed feelings for me, but Shelley was wonderful, Pearl shined and the class loved it!

Our staff of about 60 gathered in the gym for a session on trauma.

After we sat down, I watched Pearl get up and walk quietly to some people.

She checked in with her snack buddy, an EA who worked in our room.

She checked in with someone who has been fighting cancer this year.

Then she went over and touched the quest speakers who had just mentioned being a little nervous as they started the session.

She came back and laid down.

Later, she checked in on a few more.

Dogs, like Pearl, are gifts from heaven.

Happy 3rd Anniversary, Pearl!

I love taking you to school with me every day.

It's been three years since you joined us as a volunteer therapy dog at Birchmount.

I've watched you handle just about everything imaginable

and you are always gentle and loving.

You are the sweetest

and we definitely hit gold when you came to the Druart family.

Sometimes Pearl will try to lick my ankles while I'm teaching. She likes the lotion, I think, and I've told my students about it.

One day, Pearl tried again, and K exclaimed,

"Pearl is trying to lick the potion!"

Where are they now?

Annie is in grad school. She is studying to be an audiologist at Dalhousie University.

Eliza is in Architecture & Planning at Dalhousie University. She is going to be an architect.

Ethan is in kinesiology, with a minor in history, at Crandall University. He wants to be a teacher.

(Pearl is still in kindergarten.)

For the first time, I left Pearl home today.

As we walked out of the classroom yesterday, I noticed a limp.

It was unusual and it was still there this morning.

I left her home to rest and to not have to jump in and out of the car.

It was strange for all of us to not have her at school.

As we walked up the stairs to go outside to play, I said, "I miss Pearl."

I heard, "I do too!"

And then I heard, "Now we're just a NORMAL class."

I giggled.

Having Pearl in our classroom (and school) is definitely special.

(Side note: Pearl was not limping when I got home!)
