Slice of Life | Day 4

Pop's Inn
East Kemptville, Nova Scotia
May 1971

When Ethan first saw this photo a couple years ago, he thought it was Annie sitting at the table and Bampie was sitting in the rocking chair. Bampie, my dad, is actually the one standing and it's me sitting at the table!

In 1946, when my dad was 10, Grampie and Grammie Landers bought the camp for $500. Over the years, it was a wonderful place for family and friends to go fishing and hunting, have a meal, and play a game of Parcheesi. Many stories can be told by the family and friends who gathered there.

Dad tells a cute one about Mom when they were teenagers and dating at Bethany. They were "on a break" and Dad talked about taking another girl to the camp for the day. It worked! Mom decided she was going with Dad and his family!

I asked Mom in an email if I had my facts straight.  She replied with "Right you are! I just went for the day. I was suppose to be dating someone else at the time. I don't know what he (Cedric) was suppose to be doing."

  1. Loralee, I love hearing stories from the past. Your mom sounds like a hoot! That picture is perfect too. I'm sure I have one of me at that time too. So much fun to stop & reflect on the past! Get all of those stories. Write them down. Treasure them!

  2. That break
    was the wedge
    that brought us
    both together
    in the same way
    that the sky is blue
    so that clouds can scatter
    and the night is dark
    so that stars can shine,
    and through it all,
    we remember.

  3. I've recently asked my parents to put together a book called, "We remember..." that highlights their memories of historic events suck as the MLK assassination, or JFK assassination or walk to the moon. I think that their take on these events will be significant for my children.

Well done on capturing a piece of your family history.

  4. Ah, jealousy. What a powerful motivator. Have you thought of doing as Jodi suggested above and asking them to record some of these? I wish I had done this with my parents while they were still alive. We always think we have more time with them.

    1. It definitely worked in my dad's favor! Ha-ha!
Years ago I gave journals to my parents...The kind with a question or statement at the beginning of each page...When I peak inside their journals, there are many sentimental and hilarious responses!
You are so right about the importance of recording memories. I wish I could capture all the stories that come up in the day to day!

  5. Your slice and the conversation in the comment section show how important it is to record the stories before it's too late. I really like your journal idea. I have seen children giving journals with questions to each other, but it never occurred to me that I could do something similar with my parents.

  6. Great picture. It sounds like that camp has many stories and I hope you are capturing as many as you can remember. That is what I am trying to do...retell my mother's stories through my blog as well as others...but I know I will not remember them all. Your mother sounds like quite a lady. 7. I have so many pictures from my parents and nothing to go along with them. I always had the best of intentions to sit down with my Dad and ask questions, but that didn't happen. Now I try to journal as much as I can about what I remember so that I can share it with our children and grandchildren. Enjoyed your story.

  8. Too cute! I love how you ended it with such a funny comment from your mom. I also liked how you did some fact-checking. I bet there are great stories coming out of that camp--looking forward to reading more!
