Growing up, I was taught to not put and and but at the beginning of a sentence.

When I was teaching older grades, it was a message I still heard.

But writers have the freedom to use them where they want to use them.

And I don't follow that "rule" anymore.

I actually like the way they can stand out at the beginning of a sentence.
