When I was a little girl, Grampie Trites used to sing this song.
He told me that he learned the song in the garden, listening to someone else sing it.
I learned to sing it from him, but the words are still what I hear in my head from being a child.
For example, I don’t know what "a harrison leave" or "a nippitis" is really suppose to be.
Nicodemus
on a harrison leave
Started
to school one day
To
see what makes this world go round
From
a nippitis down to j
While
he stuttered and stammered
And
he stuttered so hard
it
took an hour to spell his name
The
teacher said what can you spell
Can
you spell possum pie
And
this was his reply
A
hoppa pot a p-da double s
U
u an eatin and a bes
A
hoppa pot of possum pie
I
can eat a teeddy tie
And
a p-o-u-s-e spells possum
And a p-i-e spells pie
