Celebrate | Ugly Dolls

When our kids were little, my cousin gave us an Uglydoll. Glenda said, "Every home should have an Uglydoll." When she or her husband travel apart, they sneak their Uglydoll into the other person's suitcase. We then started a little tradition in our home. We hide our Uglydoll around the house. When someone finds it, it is a reminder that he or she is loved and then it is hidden again. (I would show a picture of it, but it is somewhere waiting to be found.)

A few months ago, I shared this story with my class. I also told them how my kids even made their own versions of the "ugly doll" with Mammie a number of years ago. And then it hit me! Ask mom if she will help me make them for my students! My wonderful mother agreed. I was able to cut and stuff them, but my mom did all the sewing and magic! We used buttons from her old tin can and the fabric was given to me years ago.

In our family, we have a little Uglydoll that we hide around the house. When someone finds it, it is a reminder that he or she is loved and then it is hidden again. Here is an "ugly doll" for your family. It was made with love by my mom and me.

  2. Wow...what a way to give the gift of love and encourage more love in your students' homes. Kudos to you and your mom. I think I'll get out my sewing machine on the next snow day to make one for our family. Every home should have an Uglydoll!
